“The world is figuring out weather weaponry”
March 24
Manipulating the weather is no longer an impossible dream, writes Ryan Bachoo, 23, a Commonwealth Correspondent from Trinidad and Tobago. Scientists are learning to influence droughts, rain and hurricanes, and turn them into weapons.
For much of history, the idea of manipulating the weather was unthinkable.
Yet Serbian-American engineer Nikola Tesla had the idea of weather manipulation a century ago. The world is now figuring out weather weaponry, and there are crucial questions from conspiracy theorists when it comes to strange weather activity.
In Gakona, Alaska, 180 antennas are linked to function as one mega antenna aiming millions of watts of Extremely Low Frequency waves into one tiny patch of the atmosphere. This is the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). The United States Military, a co-founder of HAARP, says the program is about research and defense mechanisms.
The energy HAARP beams into the atmosphere heats up the ionosphere and pushes it out into space. This could indirectly affect the jet stream as the ionosphere is pushed into space, dragging the stratosphere below up and pulling the jet stream up as well, rerouting it by hundreds of miles. The result changes the way water moves through the atmosphere.
Seven known Extremely Low Frequency wave transmitters are operated by the U.S., Russia and the European Union. If they work together, they could alter the world’s weather by changing the jet stream’s route. That in turn could cause storms or droughts, or even steer hurricanes.
From 1987 through 1992, California experienced its worst-ever drought. Food prices went up as crops and livestock died. At the same time, the Soviet Union aimed ‘Woodpecker’, a similar program to HAARP, at North America. Scientists believed the problem was a mysteriously stalled high pressure system 800 miles off the coast of California, which was blocking the usual flow of moist Pacific air. Normally, the winds blow in an easterly direction. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showed the winds were blowing in a westerly direction. That meant the jet stream was much weaker. The jet stream only returned to normal in 1995. Scientists and NOAA could not explain this change.
These days, high flying airplanes can scour the skies above enemy territory, releasing metal oxides into the air. When HAARP heats those metal oxides, the skies heat to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, preventing the gathering of water vapour that would otherwise turn into clouds. No clouds mean no rain.
Weather weaponry has exploited earthquakes. Extremely Low Frequency waves can trigger catastrophic earthquakes by beaming millions of watts of waves into the ionosphere and reflecting them back down to earth and the ocean. If the reflected energy hits an unstable fault line, the consequences could be catastrophic. Dr. Brooks Agnew of Phoenix Science Foundation experienced such a consequence when doing oil and gas exploration in the 1980s in the earthquake-active city of Roseburg, Oregon. Seconds after setting up his Extremely Low Frequency wave transmitter to begin searching, an earthquake close to a magnitude of five trembled the earth.
Weather manipulators have looked at flooding. Silver iodide is commonly used for cloud-seeding, which forces tiny ice crystals that make up the cloud to fuse together. Eventually they become too heavy and fall as rain. This technique was used in the Vietnam War and during the siege of Khe Sanh by the United States.
But perhaps the greatest potential for weather modification is hurricanes. Many scientists believe the technology is here and has already struck. On August 23rd, 2005, weather scientists monitored a small storm in the Bahamas. ‘Tropical Depression 12’ was not expected to damage buildings or claim lives. Yet days later, it became a Category 5 hurricane moving at 175 miles per hour. This disaster would be called Hurricane Katrina, wreaking havoc across eastern North America, causing $180 billion in property damage, and taking the lives of over 1,800 people.
Katrina lacked the early signs that she was a natural disaster. For instance, just before coming on shore Katrina did an abrupt 90 degree turn. Her track showed that she was moving in straight lines, and hurricanes don’t move in straight lines. The year after Hurricane Katrina, the National Weather Service said not a single hurricane made it to land. While it may be hard to believe, it is also at this point that the HAARP program reached the completion stage as a defense mechanism.
Hurricane Sandy also left unanswered questions. When the storm reached the North American coastline, it stayed the same distance from land then changed direction west towards New Jersey and Philadelphia. As it reached Philadelphia it made a 90 degree turn instead of going straight on to land. It headed through the western parts of New York, hit New York City, and moved on to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and New Brunswick.
While very difficult to digest, evidence of weather modification is there. A U.S. Military Report ‘Weather as a Force Multiplier: Owning the weather in 2025’ says “…weather modification is a force multiplier with tremendous power that could be exploited across the full spectrum of war-fighting environments.”
Ways to use lightning have been created and are being enhanced. It begs a huge question about where the world really stands on global warming. But that is not the issue for those who seek to exploit weather weaponry.
Now, the future of war takes a different angle. Instead of invasions and firing rockets, it will be unleashing hurricanes and lightning. Just when I was beginning to get over the myth of Zeus in the Odyssey, reality comes along.
