“Love is exact as science and yet wonderful as art”
December 14Love is the greatest force in the universe, it can sweep the earth like a hurricane and burn the hearts of men like wildfire in a bush, writes Nnadozie Onyekuru, 23, a Commonwealth Correspondent from Maiduguri in Nigeria.
“I want you to make love, not war.” -John Lennon.
Today, I want to look within and hold fast to something that endures. For my heart weakens in disappointment and yet rises in hope like fever.
When I look at the devastation that happens across the world, I cringe. When I learn of how many more men are hungry so that fewer men could sleep in luxury, my heart breaks.
When I hear of nations stockpiling arms to kill, my flesh falls flat. Where did my God go wrong? He tells me that he is love. He tells me that he created this ancient and new beauty that we harvest and yes, when I look here and elsewhere, I see how true a wonder this earth was meant to be. We humans live in an action of love. We live on the power of love and without love, we cannot exist.
I believe in love. I believe that it is the greatest force in the universe, that it can sweep the earth like a hurricane and burn the hearts of men like wildfire in a bush. And I believe that the world would be a better place if most of us look into our hearts and flow out like the oceans that virtue which is fast becoming extinct.
Think of the things that we do not yet have the power to alter and look at them. Look at how dust rises and settles, how fog forms and snow falls. Look at how the sun, moon, stars and planets are in apple-pie order. They and their companions remain sane. All these elements cannot love but yet, their destined undertakings throw us into the picture of what we were meant to be.
If we cannot think of these things, we cannot heal the world. Our beauty, our light as humans can only shine if we practice true love. If only we can take a clean break from our present babble of selfishness and practice true love, we can be sure that mankind would finally find the meaning of existence. For love as I know it, is something as exact as science and yet wonderful as art.
As for me and my life, I would not set my sights too high on things that crumble. I have settled for one dream now: to love my God and my neighbour with all my heart and in doing that, I know that I would find the greatest.

About me:
“I am a Nigerian student. I love books. I am young and restless with firm dreams that are only tempered by Christianity. I dream of a world where people, inspired by their common humanity, engage in a global wheel of ideas and do not use history as a tool for blame game but as a lesson for the future. In my spare time, I write stories, speeches and participate in activities that advance the respect of human dignity.”
