Young Commonwealth Competitions this Summer!

July 15th, 2011

This summer the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) is busy delivering an array of competitions and programmes for young people around the Commonwealth. The 2011 Essay Competition was a huge success and our examiners are now busy marking entries from all 54 member nations.

The deadline for both the Photographic and Vision Awards has been extended to 1st August, and details of the top prize will be revealed in a special press release in two weeks time. Me and My Net is our newest competition and the RCS will be running ‘Malaria Youth Summits’ in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam next month. See below for more information on how young Commonwealth citizens can continue to make their voice heard on a global platform:

Commonwealth Photographic and Vision Awards
Extended D
eadline: 1st August

Aspiring filmmakers and photographers (under 30 years old) are invited to make a film (less than 4 minutes long) or take a photo on the theme ‘Women as Agents of Change’. Winners are often those picking up a camera for the first time – what we’re looking for is a creative spark or a new idea.

Details of the top photographic prize will be revealed in a special press release later this month, so watch this space! Other prizes include cash, camera equipment, submission to international film festivals, and exhibitions and screenings at the Commonwealth Club in London and around the Commonwealth.

Me and My Net
Deadline: 30th September

Over a million (mostly young) people die from malaria every year. Me and My Net is our newest competition, designed to engage young people in the challenges posed by the disease, and to encourage the proper use of bed nets. Young people (under 18s) are invited to get their thinking caps on and make their voice heard in a fun and creative way.

There are over 100 fantastic prizes to be won, including computers, cameras, certificates, and the star prize, a one week trip to London. Entrants can write a letter to a cousin who lives in a town where malaria is a problem, take a photo or draw a picture of themselves or a friend with a mosquito net, or create a campaign to get young people to use nets.

Visit the website to find out more www.meandmy.net and submissions can be made online here: www.rcsregister.org/public/index/index

With very best wishes from,
