In 1994, Rwanda faced one of the darkest periods in human history when over a million people were killed during the Genocide against the Tutsi. Rebuilding the country seemed like an unattainable dream. Yet, in just 30 years, Rwanda has defied the odds, rising from the ashes to become a beacon of hope and resilience.

For Rwandan youth, this is a moment to shine and contribute to the country’s continued transformation. Despite being a small, landlocked nation with challenges typical of developing countries, Rwanda has made remarkable strides in various sectors, earning its place on the global stage.

A safe and thriving nation

Rwanda is now recognized as one of the safest countries in Africa. Business Insider Africa recently ranked Rwanda as the safest nation on the continent. According to Numbeo, a global data and research platform, Rwanda has a low crime index and a high safety index, making it a secure and welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.

Sporting excellence

Rwanda is rapidly becoming a hub for world-class sporting events. Recently, President Paul Kagame announced the country has bid to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix, which last took place in Africa in 1993. Rwanda is also will host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, a prestigious cycling event marking its first-ever appearance on the African continent. The challenging terrain of Kigali will test elite cyclists and further showcase Rwanda as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Through its Visit Rwanda initiative, the country has partnered with global sports giants like Arsenal FC, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. Additionally, Rwanda has hosted the Basketball Africa League (BAL) at the Kigali Arena, positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s growing sports industry.

Cultural and entertainment milestones

In the arts and entertainment sector, Rwanda hosted the inaugural Move Afrika concert in Kigali. This groundbreaking event, organized by Global Citizen and pgLang, featured Grammy Award-winning artist Kendrick Lamar and other renowned African entertainers. The concert showcased Rwanda’s commitment to cultural advocacy, youth entrepreneurship, and economic development.

The event was so successful that a second edition has been confirmed, with Grammy-winning artist John Legend set to perform in Kigali on February 21, 2025.

In 2023, Rwanda also made history by hosting the Trace Awards and Festival at the BK Arena, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for global entertainment.

Strategic partnerships

Rwanda has signed notable agreements to promote tourism and investment, such as the partnership with Steve Harvey’s company, BILT LLC. This agreement focuses on skills development in film, media, and education while promoting health and wellness initiatives.

The country has also hosted high-profile events like the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), further positioning Rwanda as a global hub for diplomacy and collaboration.

Leadership and vision

One of Rwanda’s most outstanding qualities is its strong leadership and clear vision. Under President Kagame’s leadership, Rwanda has become synonymous with security, cleanliness, and visa openness.

His statement, “We are not too small for anything,” reflects the nation’s belief in its limitless potential.

As a youth born after the Genocide, I am inspired by how Rwanda has turned its tragic history into a story of hope and resilience. Our country’s journey reminds us that anything is possible with good leadership, unity, and determination.

This is indeed the best time to be a proud Rwandan. Let us embrace this moment, seize the opportunities available, and continue to build a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come.
