A Tribute to Honourable Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi

September 15th, 2024

The passing of Honourable Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi is a profound loss for Uganda, the Commonwealth, and young people around the world. As the Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development (Children and Youth Affairs), and Chair of the Commonwealth Youth Ministerial Taskforce during the critical COVID-19 years, Sarah Mateke’s legacy will be remembered for her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to youth development.

She was instrumental in helping the Commonwealth achieve its vision for a forward-thinking youth policy agenda, particularly during the pandemic, when young people needed strong advocacy the most. Her leadership and tireless work were key in making 2023-2024 the Year of Youth across the Commonwealth—a powerful affirmation of her belief in the importance of empowering the next generation.

Honourable Mateke was more than just a leader; she was someone you could talk to, someone who truly cared. Her kindness and passion resonated in everything she did, making youth development a priority both in Uganda and globally.

Uganda will miss a devoted public servant, and the Commonwealth will mourn the loss of a leader whose warmth and vision left an indelible mark. Her legacy will continue through the lives of the young people she so deeply impacted and championed.

May she rest in peace.
